The verse under the portrait translates as, “In chains on the throne, with death approaching/ Their resolve undeniable,/ At all times rising above their fate,/ The palm leaf of the martyr crowning their lives.”

The title page reads: “The Death of Louis XVI: Tragedy: Followed by His Will and a Letter to His Confessor. ‘I found some sympathetic and compassionate spirits. That these rejoice in their hearts for the tranquility that must give them their way of thinking.’ The Will of Louis XVI.”
