John Foxe was in exile in Europe in the 1554 during the restoration of Catholicism under Mary I when he published the first edition of what would become the most influential & important work of this period for promoting the Protestant cause in England.

The illustrations are an example of Foxe going against a tradition that disapproved of illustrated religious books. Foxe’s work is the only illustrated martyrology. It owed its images to the tradition of German Bible illustration.

Foxe’s Actes and Monuments became most famous for recording and illustrating the arrest, torture, and burning of Protestant martyrs in Christian history past and present. Foxe’s book keeps images indelibly linked to suffering for one’s faith.
